Durham Taekwondo is very proud to have an exceptional instructional team whose roots can be traced back to 1974 under renown Grand Master Gwak Ki Ok. Our instructional team works hard to ensure that every student realizes their full potential by providing the latest and most updated methods of instruction for student development. Instructor Sofia Hovnanian has received the highest recognition from World Taekwondo for promoting education in Taekwondo.

Master Sofia Hovnanian started Taekwondo at the age of 3 and has never looked back. For more than 20 years she has continued to grow as a martial artist. She has been a driving force in bringing an exceptional program to the Durham Region. Master Sofia’s teaching abilities have been recognized by the World Taekwondo by President Chungwon Choue in appreciation of her dedicated service and outstanding contribution to the development of Taekwondo (see article here).  Today, she is an esteemed martial artist, instructor, and coach who enjoys both the recreational and competitive qualities of the sport. In addition to the evening kid’s class programs she has developed the outstanding Kick Smart Afterschool, BBC and Durham High Performance competitive team programs. Master Sofia, together with her team of passionate Instructors, continues to search for new and innovative ways to teach the martial arts to all who want to learn.
